Great story! Hey, what was/is the name of that pizza joint, i think it was not far from the main strip (my geography of the town is seriously outdated). i seem to recall some really great pizza from that place, or maybe it was the time and the people i was with. also, did you ever go to Cue's place. i think i read that the owner died very recently. also, of course, used to go to Muellers quite frequently, though definitely not as much as others. One other question, i used to go to this one really local bar, which was situated in a predominately black (or African-American) section of town. they had one pool table and were open late or even on Sundays (unofficially) and would sell a six pack for the right price. but i remember a pretty damn interesting juke box, and i would go in there and play this one song all the time, i think it was called "strokin'" ... just freakin' unreal times. what was the name of that bar? i'm sure i've got it penned into one of my old journals, but just curious.

i was there in Atchison from '88 to '90. of course proximity to Missouri was perfect for buying booze on Sundays.

one other memory that has stayed with me is the smell of grain being processed from the local refineries. it took me some time to get used to it, but i'm sure you hardly even notice it anymore.

Pretty sure the bar you're trying to think of is the Rock Inn, a place I frequented when I was in H.S. (65 grad) and after. In those days 18 was the legal drinking age, so, we went there when we were 16.
There was also Checkers, in your day, in mine, it was known as the Wharf. Stories abound.
I think it was around '98, Buddy Miles played at Checkers, he had an Uncle here that he spent time with when he was young, so, he returned for another visit.
Pizza places ? hummm .... Gambini's, Breadeaux, Pizza Hut of course, Pete's on the Mall, Gary's out on Main.....I dunno.

Ya that's it! The Rock! Though why does it come back to me now as the Dew Rock Inn??? First time i ever stepped in that place, got some really suspicious looks, as it was definitely off the beaten path, but after several visits the locals in that bar and area really were wonderful folk and had some great times there. Anyway my friend, thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories! The Hot Tuna is going out to you tomorrow morning ... hope it arrives safe and that you enjoy it. Listening to it now for the first time on the big stereo and i gotta say, i'm impressed. Cheers ... T.
